Name of film about performers on a river steamboat?

I think it is a pretty famous old musical from the 1950's. The plot centererd around the lives of the performers on that boat. I think it was pretty racist in a 1950's film sort of a way. Can anyone think of the title? Thanks for your help!

definitely showboat! It's actually one of the first all-american musicals. I think it was written earlier than the fifties--might be from the late twenties--but the movie didn't get made till much later.
