“Earth Hour is an international event that asks households and businesses to turn off their lights and non-essential electrical appliances for one hour on the evening of 29 March at 8 pm local time until 9 pm to promote electricity conservation and thus lower carbon emissions.” (Wikipedia)
Last year it was only Sydney involved, but this year it’s a global event with cities all over the world doing it.
We’ve just had our Earth Hour a few hours ago here in Melbourne. Will you be participating too?

Sadly, I’ll be at work, so no. Will let the family know though – never heard of it until now :0)
Only if I can still use my iPhone!
I’ve never heard anything about it before now.
Yes. Everything that draws power from the grid is going to be shutdown in my apartment. I don’t think Louisville is one of the cities that’s participating. So I’m acting alone.
I hadn’t heard about it until now, but sure! Why not?
Yes… my Earth Hour is at 8:00 pm – 9:00 pm today. I’m going to be at a party, but during earth hour we’ll be turning off all the lights and will be using candles instead! lol
@jonno: I love that you asked. I already had plans to go to an improv performance at that time; otherwise I’d join in. However, after that, from 1 am to 9 am, I’m definitely not using electricity.
Sure, I’ll do it. I didn’t know about it until this thread. I’m sure my SO and I can think of something to do for an hour in the dark!
Hey, did you all see that Google is black today in honor of it?
I’ll be at work..maybe I can talk my manager into dimming the lights!!
and yes, I saw google!! I thought there was something wrong with my computer!!!
yes. Tottally. I might use my iPhone because it runs of battery and I’m gonna be charging it anyway.
Well, looks like I’ve missed it (although the UK may wait ‘til they’ve switched to daylight savings), but I always tend to be conservative anyways.
I remember last year when this was suggested, electricity companies warned people not to do it: the switch off was okay, but the switch on of a lot of appliances at the same time would cause massive problems for the power plants. Though I believe there never was a problem, because it’s never been overly advertised or enthusiastically supported so far.
4sure, fosho.. ALREADY HAPPENED… It as FUN!
No, our earth hour is yet to be, but I won’t personally be involved.
Here is a short video that gives some pretty compelling reasons for not participating in Earth Hour.
