Is A2DP bluetooth possible in the iPhone?

I’m wondering if you need a different chip or just a software upgrade to get the wonderous functionality that is A2DP.

Not with the current configurations. Some claim it could be activated with a future software update, but I have not heard any rumors. This was one of the biggest oversights in the iPhone from the very beginning, and I made that opinion known to Apple and anyone else who would listen in the first couple months :)
