It's not time for my period, so why am I bleeding?

Asked by rodydoe89 (356points) September 22nd, 2010

Yesterday, I went to the bathroom and there was a small amount of light red blood on the toilet paper. Twice that happened. So far today I haven’t had that issue, but my nipples are very tender. I ended my last period on September 2, and according to my calculations I shouldn’t be starting again until the 30. Is this just early PMS symptoms or something I should worry about?

Is there any chance you could be pregnant? Some women have implantation bleeding (light spotting or just some when they wipe) before their periods are due. It could also just be that your cycle is starting early this month. It is normal for cycles to fluctuate some, but twenty days is short for a cycle, so I would keep track of it and if it happens again, make an appointment to discuss it with your GYN.

A lot of times I start spotting before I get my period, so that is definitely possible.

Are you one the pill? If so could be breakthrough bleeding, if not implantation bleeding from pregnancy. Or, just a strange fluctuation in hormones this month.

Pregnancy could be possible I guess, but my SO and I always use condoms… I know they aren’t 100% but… No I’m not on the pill; my body doesn’t handle them well. I just moved from Alabama to New York City, do you think it might be a change of environment?? I just thought about that.

The stress from the move could have affected your cycle. I would recommend keeping track of your periods for the next few months to see how they are doing. If you keep having this happen, talk to a GYN.

I experienced this when I was pregnant. The tenderness in the nipples especially. Take an over-the-counter pregnancy test and if that is negative, check with your doctor. If not pregnancy, it is probably just hormonal fluctuations, but I believe in being safe rather than sorry.

I think the breast tenderness mean more likely pregnant than simple hormone fluctuation from stress, unless this is something you have experienced before? Some women get breast tenderness before their periods, I have only experienced when pregnant, and once when I was using topical estrogen for a condition. If I were you I would assume you are pregnant for the next week and avoid alcohol and pop a multivitamin daily until you can use a pregnancy test, it is a few days early for it to be accurate now probably, or you get your full blown period. Although if you just can’t wait and it comes up pregnant, you are pregnant, if it comes up negative, you need to repeat it in a week. False negative is very possible this early.

Isn’t it too early to take a pregnancy test? Don’t you have to wait until you are “officially late”?

Seaofclouds's avatar

There are some tests out now that you can take 5 days before your missed period, but it is best to wait until you actually miss your period so that you don’t get a false negative result.

I’ve had times where just my nipples would be sensitive before my period before, so it really could go either way (pregnancy or PMS).

I used to experience breast tenderness as a PMS symptom, but I haven’t had that issue in a few years. But it isn’t my breasts that are tender, it’s only my nipples.

@rodydoe89 I just added to my answer just above. Yes, it is too early for a urine test. It might come back positive, then you can safely assume you are pregnant, but more likely you will get a false negative this early even if you are pregnant.

Hmmm… I’d pay attention to other things until you take a test. Pregancy signs are so much like PMS. Are you super tired? Does your sense of smell seem WAY stronger? (Big pregnant sign.) There can be cramping in early pregnancy, also part of the implanting process.
Like everyone else said, wait it out and if you are worried about being pregnant take a test. Accidents happen with condoms.
Otherwise it could easily be a weird period. Especially in a new environment. Have you been hanging around a certain girl a lot lately? There are dominant females and if you hang around them your cycle changes to theirs.
Oh and I have only had nipple tenderness before for PMS. It’s not something that always happens for me, it’s kinda random.

I haven’t had any other kinds of symptoms, except waking up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom and I’ve never had to do that before, but that’s probably because of my intake of fluids at night. I haven’t hung out with a female in almost two months. I live in an apartment with my fiance, my brother, and three of his friends.

Needing to pee more is a symptom of pregnancy.

JLeslie's avatar

Oh, and I have heard that woman start to cycle together based on some sort of. Hormonal relationship to the men who are around the women. That never made sense to me? Maybe nature figured the men returned from hunting trips and needed to get all of the women pregnant at once?

rodydoe89's avatar

Wow, that’s crazy! But naturally that makes sense.

Hmm, I used to hear that women’s cycles would sometimes sync when they were around each other on a regular basis. I never bought into it. Men don’t have a cycle, do they? They just seem to like sex at pretty much any time.

JLeslie's avatar

@Pied_Pfeffer I had heard the same thing, but then recently someone told me that there has to be men around to sync up the women. Who knows if it is true. I never had the same cycle as my roommates.

krose1223's avatar

Well, I know me and all my sisters were always on the same cycle… And we had our brother and our dad in the house…
Yeah the pee thing is definitely a preggers symptom. Uh ohhhhh…
