Do vegetables upset your stomach?
People always warn me (usually in a joking manner) about eating foods like cabbage or broccoli or beans… always a comment about running to the bathroom or having gas. These foods have never, ever bothered my stomach… I could eat cabbage all day without a second thought. Why is it that particular veggies seem to bother so many people?

Not sure…Those people just use cabbage as an excuse to fart like a buffalo.poor, poor cabbage :(
I’m sure at some point in my life, they have…but, as a rule, no. Plus, I love them.
Raw vegetables are difficult for me to digest in large quantities, I get blocked up. Gas and diarrhea are not the problem at all, I get constipated and get some gastrointestinal pain.
@JLeslie maybe that is what they mean? I just assume that when they say “run for the toilet”, it means the opposite. Maybe it is the opposite problem and I am just misunderstanding.
@TheOnlyNeffie no, I think your first assumption is correct. If I eat cooked veggies I don’t have trouble, I think my tummy doesn’t break down the vegetables well, so when they are hard and raw it stops me up. I have the same trouble with nuts, especially almonds. I love almonds.
@TheOnlyNeffie i’ve had problems after visiting Subway. Almost never go there anymore. They have a history of ocoli. I’m talking about tomatoes, lettuce, etc., not the vegis that I love…green beans, broccoli, turnip greens, okra, etc.
@BoBo1946 I hate Subway, so you won’t get any arguments from me.
@TheOnlyNeffie once went there for weigh purposes, but after i got real sick once…no more.
I went the first 20.5 years of my life being able to eat a head of broccoli in one sitting and feel awesome because 1. broccoli is awesome and 2. it is my favorite thing ever.
then i moved to colorado. maybe thats just a coincidence that the timing was exactly when i moved, but after that when i eat broccoli i literally almost die. last night i made the mistake of having some broccoli cheddar soup. 3 hours later i had heartburn, bloating, gas, nausea, and then later diarrhea. WHAT? yeah! its horrible. i cant eat broccoli now without 2 heartburn pills on hand, and even then i am usually too scared. it makes me really sad.
no other vegetables affect me though.
@deni that is wild… maybe, that one time you got some ocoli “stuff!”
No never. I make soup each and every day, from whatever vegetables I have purchased or left over from dinner the night before.
Perhaps if people don’t eat vegetables on a regular basis, then their stomach is unable to cope.
I love my veggies, but tent to eat Turnip and Cabbage in moderation, gives me awful embarrassing wind.
@partyparty someone else said that to me, about it being a problem for people that don’t eat many vegetables to begin with. Maybe that is really what it is about for most.
Not really, per se, but looking at a beet makes me want to hurl. Does that count? ;-)
@TheOnlyNeffie I find if I haven’t eaten beef, pork or lamb for some time I will get stomach ache.
I’m not a vegetarian, but I do love my veggies, and eat more vegetables than meat.
I suppose it’s what your stomach gets used to.
@iammia cabbage….more like a tornado!
@uberbatman ditto…....lazy! but, it’s nice to hear from you! Thank you!
Should I ask to move this to social?
oh, my comment will be deleted…forgot.
I don’t mind the conversation wandering, I was just hoping for actual answers before the fart jokes took over. I can ask to move it, though. :)
Loll..got’cha… did you know the oldest joke recorded by man was a fart joke?
btw, my above answer was an impression of luciellex3
@BoBo1946 I just looked it up. How about that. lol.
Just cucumbers, they KILL me. I have had to take Percocet for the pain. The cucumbers seem to cause me cramp really really bad.
taking an opiate for stomach pain isnt exactly a good idea….
Yes, every time I see Stephen Hawking I feel sick to my stomach. That poor, sweet, unfortunate wee man :¬)
Only excess butter or seasoning, especially garlic.
I’m a vegan – gas is a part of my life – besides, it’s good when your body releases gas (mine, these days, doesn’t even smell) because it means it’s all working properly inside of you.
Alright, well that undoes the theory that it bothers people who don’t eat enough veggies. So I wonder why some people are bothered and some aren’t. Interesting.
@TheOnlyNeffie They need a reason to not eat veggies – yes, even if they’re advising you to not eat them, they’re only saying it to themselves.
@Simone_De_Beauvoir “mine, these days, doesn’t even smell” im callin bullshit on that one. I realize a healthier diet will reduce this, but you seriously cant say after eating a nice helping of beans your gas doesnt smell.
I would need a better reason than gas to live a broccoli-less life. :P
@uberbatman Sometimes, my farts smell…sure…but it’s only when I have tacos with veggie meat – it’s a big more processed so it smells…when I eat beans…which I just did…they don’t smell..it is possible that I have lost all sense of smell or have high tolerance now because I fart so much.
”.it is possible that I have lost all sense of smell or have high tolerance now because I fart so much” Id say more like probable. No one thinks their own gas smells, but to others, it definitely does.
@uberbatman But, before in my life, I did smell my gas.
@TheOnlyNeffie It’s just gas and farts and all, you know – we all do it – our home is free for that kind of stuff so if you ever want to come over and eat and pass gas, by all means.
Not at all. I love veggies!
Glad you changed this to social Nef….on another question, someone has a “happy trigger finger” today!
No me, unless I don’t chew them up enough. I also find that drinking a lot of water (one glass every hour) solves most digestive issues.
