What makes you glad to be alive?

Asked by Hawaii_Jake (37749points) September 23rd, 2010

A friend and I were chatting online this morning about many different things including the advances in astronomy. He said it made him glad to be alive.

Are there things happening these days that make you glad to be alive? Advances in science or medicine? The march for equality of LGBT people? Seeing the International Space Station take shape?

Maybe it’s something closer to home like your children or other family members? Do the colors of the flowers in your garden or the fall leaves do it for you?

What makes you take a breath and think you’re glad to be alive?

Nature, music, and loved ones.

Nature, friends, antiques, good food, and the potential for fame and fortune.

Simplicity is key for me. The little things, like eating a fresh tomato, make me happy to be alive. Everything around is beautiful. Possibilities, leaps, the future. All of these things are wonderful.

On a sappy note, @timtrueman makes me happy to be alive since it’s given me the chance to fall in love with him.

I enjoy many things in this life and enjoy learning and progressing. But I would rather be on the other side. When I passed away I experienced some things and I did not want to come back here but was told I was to do some things before I will be brought back home and then I was looking up at the person that brought me back. I remember a lot of the experiences but also know there was a whole lot that was suppressed again. So I long for the time I lay down and don’t get back up. Thanks for the question.

Wow. Just about everything. My daughter, first and foremost, then everything else. Even things that distress me or make me angry make me glad that I can react.

Oh, yeah, and coffee.

Beauty in all it’s forms, loved ones, nature, laughter, good people, good tunes, good food. Hey, pretty much life. :)

Rain cleanses all my bad feelings. Trees take my breath away and remind me that there are more living creatures on the planet than I tend to take note of in the city. Literature – because I can read poetry and connect with men and women who existed long ago. I’m thankful I live in a time in which I can see two men hop on a motorcycle after buying groceries, share a kiss, and drive home together :) Love, in general, makes me happy to be alive.

@erichw1504 Have you tried the throwback Mtn Dew?

I am going to be starting on my “coffee table” this weekend. I found a 100 year old pine tool chest (trunk) and I’m going to sand it lightly, apply linseed oil to give it a bit of shine, then place cool artsy vintage photos on top and pour a clear epoxy resin over that. I can’t wait to start it! I’m happier than a pig in poop!

@lucillelucillelucille I was going to include your wit, but that sounded a little sappy. Screw it. here it is: @lucillelucillelucille‘s wit.

The coming of my little humminbird friends each summer in mid-July. they put on a show thats unbeatable. one female is constantly battling with two males for their time at the feeder. she is a little greedy and wants it all to herself. the aerial show they give is adorable.

I can’t say it better than Woody Allen did in “Manhattan.”

Isaac Davis (Allen):
“Why is life worth living? It’s a very good question. Um… Well, There are certain things I guess that make it worthwhile. uh… Like what… okay… um… For me, uh… ooh… I would say… what, Groucho Marx, to name one thing… uh… um… and Wilie Mays… and um… the 2nd movement of the Jupiter Symphony… and um… Louis Armstrong, recording of Potato Head Blues… um… Swedish movies, naturally… Sentimental Education by Flaubert… uh… Marlon Brando, Frank Sinatra… um… those incredible Apples and Pears by Cezanne… uh… the crabs at Sam Wo’s…and Tracy’s face.”

@Cruiser Funny you should ask. Just had one this morning. I tried my first one when it first came out. It isn’t bad and has an interesting flavor, but it definitely doesn’t top regular Mtn Dew.

Nature and living in the beautiful surroundings that I live in.

Watching the ( right now ) deer and wild turkeys eating acorns in my yard, the woodpeckers chattering away in the trees, the sky, the clouds, the breeze. I am a very aware person and I feel happy and excited every day to be one of the life forms on this amazing planet.

It is also humbling, and I often compare my life to those creatures in nature.
We ALL, every single life form, from the beetle to the buffalo seek comfort, survival and happiness.

I see the ‘story’ in everything, the squirrel that woke up and went in search of breakfast to be run over on the road….one never knows what the next moment might bring, be aware and celebrate your aliveness. ;-)

There isn’t much right now that makes me happy to be alive except the 5 minutes i get to spend with my friend on week days. And the 8 hours in my room that i lay undisturbed.

My children, my life, my experiences, my wife.
The sun, the sky, the clouds that pass by,
The future, the past, the friendships that last,
The stories and tales, some music that wails
Every minute of every day and
I wouldn’t have it any other way.

What really makes me glad to be alive is having a close brush with death. I don’t want to get that close ever again. Probably sounds weird, but this is actually something I can do something about. I’ll die sooner or later, just not by my own hand.

Since I’ve come through that, I am so much more grateful for just about everything. Even to fight with my wife—I wouldn’t be able to do that if I were dead. Everything makes me happy now, on one level (I really don’t like fighting)—because I am feeling things, it means I am alive, and that means I’ve made it one more day.

I always use my pets names when filling out any website info. or political jargon junk mail that shows up. I get more emails in my spam folder for my now gone cat ‘Gadwicke’ & my goose ‘Marwyn’.

“Congratulations Marwyn! You have won a dinner at Outback Steakhouse! ” cracks me up every time.

Um, Marwyn will only have the salad. haha
