Why do people write email addresses this way?

Asked by MyNewtBoobs (19069points) September 24th, 2010

Sometimes, I see someone write an email address like this:

myname [at] yahoo [dot] com

What’s the reasoning behind this? Why not write it as you would actually type it into your email client – myname@yahoo.com?

Bots scan the internet for e-mail addresses. That is why. It helps remove the chances of getting on a spammers list. But any script that is good will be smart enough to parse that type of address.

Some sites (like dating sites) don’t want members to talk directly (they want the business on their site), so email addresses have to be written in a way that the site’s software won’t directly pick it up.

Both of the above answers are true. :)

Brilliant! I just thought it was longhand and supposed to be cute.

@SundayKittens :: And just a helpful hint. Never ever click a link to be removed from a list in spam. If you do they know it is a valid e-mail address and you will just get a lot more.

@johnpowell, I don’t disagree with you—it’s definitely risky clicking on unknown links. But I have been successfully removed from many maillists by clicking unsubscribe. Apparently, there are reputable sites that do comply with opt-out rules.

I wonder if this is one of the reasons that I keep getting emails for new bras. I have never worn any and don’t plan on starting any time soon.
