What is a song that means something to you, you can relate to or makes you feel like its about you and or your life?

Asked by InkyAnn (2441points) September 29th, 2010

What is a song, poem, lyrical sentence, chorus, saying, or statement that lifts your spirits up, gives you hope, makes you feel better or makes you feel like it was written about you or your life?

Im a very independent and “strong” person. Alot of people rely on me to give them strength or get them through something. Most people in my life see me as the one person that can handle ANYTHING and will never let anything get to me and never be fanciful. Its true for the most part I am like that but theres one song out there that when the chorus is sung it makes me feel like the singer is singing about me. That song is by Miley Cyrus/Hannah Montanas Ordinary girl. Heres the part im referring to:

“I’m just an ordinary Girl
Sometimes I’m Lazy, I get bored.
I get scared, I feel ignored
I feel happy, I get silly
I choke on my own words
I make wishes, I have dreams
And I still want to believe
Anything can happen in this world
for an Ordinary Girl”

What is yours?

Veronica Sawyer Smokes describes my first (and maybe even my most recent relationship) perfectly.

Lyrics:
Oh my story is not the oldest of its kind.
I was too touched to see you clearly,
far too young to realize I had loved so dearly you,
whose world I had designed,
but the sweet smoke came with mirrors
and it brought tears to my wide eyes.

Dying just to see you…
dying since I misconstrued
your blue heart, black eyes,
feigning falling, words I won’t forget.
I died right when I saw you
while you shared that cigarette.

Oh I saw you every time I close my eyes,
in the Hughes film I had scored,
produced and starred in, in my mind.
I could recite you, well,
I’d written every line…
but you strayed far from my flawless script
on which I’d spent a lifetime!

Falling over dead.
Dying since I had misread
your blue heart, black eyes,
feigning falling, words I won’t forget.
I died right when I saw you
while you shared that cigarette.

MIKE, i think weve been thru this before about how great that song is, but i cant help to feel a lil bad that that song describes your most current relationship. i mean the passion he felt for one person is incredible but that she turned out to be someone else then what he thought was basically “his angel” is so very very sad… im sorry luv

“In the Backseat” by The Arcade Fire. I got goosebumps when I heard the first line (“I like the peace in the backseat”) and welled up with tears as the song continued. It frightened me how intimately I connected with this song.

My mum was struck by a drunk driver on the freeway when she was pregnant with my older brother. The firefighters had to pry the door off with the jaws of life to get her out. The entire time, she was far more concerned with protecting her unborn son. I’ve never been able to get this image out of my head.

To me, this song pulls to surface memories of loss, the fear of losing loved ones, the bravery of my mum, and how I have to be brave but don’t know whether I can.

@Inked_up_chic, it’s okay, m’dear. By “most recent relationship” I actually meant “the one that recently ended.”

@muppetish, fucking epic song. And damn… that’s a story. Sorry to hear about that.

From the first day I heard this song, it has taken a firm grip on my heart & has never let go. I suppose I connect with it so much because in my life, every thing I do doesn’t feel right. I look around & it seems so easy for everyone else. I think to myself, what the hell am I doing wrong? This song reminds me, it is just not my year.
I removed the repeating chorus to save space.

Not Your Year – The Weepies.

Scattered shadows on a wall, you watch the long light fall
Some impressions stay and some will fade.
Tattered shoes outside your door, clothes all on the floor
Your life feels like the morning after all year long.

Every day it starts again
You cannot say if, if you’re happy
You keep trying to be
Try harder, maybe, maybe, this is not your year.
This is not your year

Movies, TV screens reflect just what you expected
There’s a world of shiny people somewhere else.
Out there following their bliss
living easy, getting kissed
while you wonder, what else you’re doing wrong.

Breathe through it, write a list of desires
Make a toast, make a wish, slash some tires
Paint a heart repeating, beating “Don’t give up, don’t give up.”

@rpmpseudonym i have to say that when i first started reading those lyrics i thougt “This is so sad that someone would feel like they can relate to this” but then i got to the end and thought that that has to be one of the best songs for someone that needs their spirits lifted!! that life is getting to be “too much”. it would deff bring me hope that i could get thru

Though I don’t identify with the entire song, there are a few lines in Graceland by Paul Simon that get me every time: “There is a girl in New York City who calls herself the human trampoline. And sometimes when I’m falling, flying or tumbling in turmoil I say ‘Whoa, so this is what she means,’” and “And she said losing love is like a window in your heart, everybody sees you’re blown apart, everybody sees the wind blow.”

Every time I hear the song Little Lion Man by Mumford and Sons it breaks my heart a little bit, but I love the song.

Junebug by Robert Francis reminds me of my ex because I listened to it obsessively after he broke up with me. It’s a beautiful, sad song.

@tragiclikebowie, Little Lion Man is one of my favorite songs.

@tragiclikebowie graceland is great song, never heard the other two but you cant deny that there is something beautiful in the fact that something so simple as words someone put together either because it ment something to them or it was just something that came into their head can help soooo many people for diff reasons :)

Oh, I can’t believe I forgot this song. Lover, You Should Have Come Over by Jeff Buckley. This should be pretty self explanatory:

Looking out the door I see the rain fall upon the funeral mourners
Parading in a wake of sad relations as their shoes fill up with water

Maybe I’m too young to keep good love from going wrong
But tonight, you’re on my mind so you never know

Broken down and hungry for your love with no way to feed it
Where are you tonight? Child, you know how much I need it.
Too young to hold on and too old to just break free and run

Sometimes a man gets carried away,
When he feels like he should be having his fun
Much too blind to see the damage he’s done
Sometimes a man must awake to find that, really,
He has no-one

So I’ll wait for you… And I’ll burn
Will I ever see your sweet return?
Oh, will I ever learn?
Oh, Lover, you should’ve come over
Cause it’s not too late.

Lonely is the room the bed is made the open window lets the rain in
Burning in the corner is the only one who dreams he had you with him
My body turns and yearns for a sleep that won’t ever come

It’s never over, my kingdom for a kiss upon her shoulder
It’s never over, all my riches for her smiles when I slept so soft against her
It’s never over, all my blood for the sweetness of her laughter
It’s never over, she’s a tear that hangs inside my soul forever

But maybe I’m just too young to keep good love from going wrong
Oh… lover you should’ve come over…

Yes, and I feel too young to hold on
I’m much too old to break free and run
Too deaf, dumb, and blind
To see the damage I’ve done
Sweet lover, you should’ve come over
Oh, love, well I’ll wait for you
Lover, you should’ve come over
‘Cause it’s not too late.

@tragiclikebowie, speaking of Jeff Buckley, “Song to the Siren” is another favorite song of mine that means a lot to me. though I personally prefer the This Mortal Coil version

Long afloat on shipless oceans
I did all my best to smile
‘Til your singing eyes and fingers
Drew me loving to your isle
And you sang, “Sail to me, sail to me,
Let me enfold you,
Here I am, here I am
Waiting to hold you”
Did I dream you dreamed about me?
Were you hare when I was fox?
Now my foolish boat is leaning
Broken lovelorn on your rocks
For you sing, “Touch me not, touch me not,
come back tomorrow: O my heart,
O my heart shines from the sorrow”
I am puzzled as the newborn child
I am troubled as the tide:
Should I stand amid the breakers?
Should I lie with death my bride?
Hear me sing, “Swim to me, swim to me,
Let me enfold you,
Here I am, Here I am,
Waiting to hold you”

I’d go hungry; I’d go black and blue,
I’d go crawling down the avenue.
No, there’s nothing that I wouldn’t do
To make you feel my love….

Winners and Losers by Social Distortion. This song resonates with me because life is all about the choices we make, and while we might not always make the “right” choice we need to understand that we made the conscious decision to do it. It’s about the risks taken and not taken. http://youtu.be/o8eDUT7iyDk

Winners and losers, turn the pages of my life
We’re beggars and choosers, with all the struggles and the strife
I got no reason to turn my head and look the other way
We’re good and we’re evil, which one will I be today?

There’s saints and sinners
Life’s a gamble and you might lose
There’s cowards and heroes
Both have been known now to break the rules
There’s lovers and haters
The strong and the weak will all have their day
We’re devils and angels
Which one will I be today?

Chorus:
Are you happy now with all the choices you’ve made?
Are there times in life when you know you should’ve stayed?
Will you compromise and then realize the price is too much to pay?
Winners and losers, turn the pages of my life
We’re beggars and choosers, with all the struggles and the strife
I got no reason to turn my head and look the other way
We’re good and we’re evil, which one will I be today?

There’s a light and a dark side
Standing at the crossroads, there we’ll meet
There’s prophets and fools there
The lies and the truth, will be at our feet
I got a reason to turn my head and look the other way
Its heaven and hell here, which one will I live today?

Chorus:
Are you happy now with all the choices you’ve made?
Are there times in life when you know you should’ve stayed?
Did you compromise and then realize the price was too much to pay?
Winners and losers, which one will you be today?

Which one will you be today?
Which one will I be today?

A very dear friend gave me Simon & Garfunkels song “Bridge over troubled water” when I was going through a bad patch. It really helped me.

When you’re weary, feeling small,
When tears are in your eyes, I will dry them all;
I’m on your side. When times get rough
And friends just can’t be found,
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down.
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down.

When you’re down and out,
When you’re on the street,
When evening falls so hard
I will comfort you.
I’ll take your part.
When darkness comes
And pain is all around,
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down.
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down.

Sail on silvergirl,
Sail on by.
Your time has come to shine.
All your dreams are on their way.
See how they shine
If you need a friend
I’m sailing right behind.

Like a bridge over troubled water
I will ease your mind.
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will ease your mind.

The theme tune from The Littlest Hobo has been very fitting in my life these last few years…

“There’s a voice that keeps on calling me.
Down the road. That’s where I’ll always be.
Oh, every stop I make, I make a new friend.
Can’t stay for long. Just turn around, and I’m gone again.
Maybe tomorrow, I’ll want to settle down.
Until tomorrow, I’ll just keep movin’ on.”

(Hopefully the move in 3 weeks time will be the one where I’ll settle down….)

@Fiddle_Playing_Creole_Bastard wasn’t that his dad, Tim, who did that? Or did Jeff do a version I didn’t know about?

TexasDude's avatar

@tragiclikebowie, you’re right, it was Tim. My bad. I always get them confused.

tragiclikebowie's avatar

@Fiddle_Playing_Creole_Bastard Well they do sound and look very similar so that’s understandable :P

A song by Billy Joel describes at least parts of my life pretty well, a few lyrics are: Friday night I crashed your party
Saturday I said I’m sorry
Sunday came and trashed me out again
I was only having fun
Wasn’t hurting any one
And we all enjoyed the weekend for a change

I’ve been stranded in the combat zone
I walked through Bedford Stuy alone
Even rode my motorcycle in the rain
And you told me not to drive
But I made it home alive
So you said that only proves that I’m insane

You may be right
I may be crazy
But it just may be a lunatic you’re looking for
Turn out the light
Don’t try to save me
You may be wrong for all I know
But you may be right
