What am I doing wrong? my popovers won't pop?

Asked by trailsillustrated (16804points) September 30th, 2010

I have made popovers twice, I have followed the recipe, last night I put ¼ teaspon baking powder in. They come out alright enough to eat, but they don’t rise! They’re more like little balls. What am I doing wrong? Any suggestions?

Was the oven hot enough? Is your baking powder fresh?

Here is an article with some tips on popover making.

Make sure your oven is preheated to 425 degrees, my recipe says not to overmix, are your eggs fresh?

Does your oven have an upper heating element? Popovers need to be heated only from the bottom, so if the oven has an upper heating element, you should take it out.
