What to look for when buying a metal detector?

Asked by poisonedantidote (21685points) September 30th, 2010

Where I live, I just so happen to be in walking distance of 3 seperate 1 to 4 mile long beaches, and I could travel with ease to at least a dozen more. because of this, I have been toying with the idea of buying a metal detector to go out and search the beaches in my spare time.

What would be the ideal thing to look for, considering I am searching in sand, mainly looking for lost jewelery and coins?

The sand is about 3 to 4 feet deep, (the beaches are artificial) resting on a bed of rocks.

Not all detectors are good on wet sand. try looking at a brand called Minelab. they make a very good detector.
