And if so, what happened afterward and how did you feel?

One of my dogs bit my finger while I was giving them some treats. I was really pissed off at my dog, but I tried to understand that it didn’t do it on purpose.

I was bitten by a doberman pinscher when I was 17. We were fostering him, and he had a problem with being fear agressive. To this day I’m not quite sure what triggered him, but he jumped up and bit at my neck, right where my jugular vein is. Luckily, by boyfriend was there at the time and basically tackled him from behind. I didn’t sustain any severe injuries, I was very fortunate.

When I worked in kennels and in veterinary offices I got bit several times by both dogs and cats. The worst was a really fat schnauzer. I was taking him out of his cage, and he bit my boob. OW!! He didn’t want to let go, and when I tried to pry him off of me, he bit right through my thumbnail. Because of the pain, I dropped him accidentally. Luckily he wasn’t hurt from the fall, but I was pretty sore for a few days. I learned how to be more cautious after that. I never really got mad at the animals that bit me because I knew they only did it out of fear or pain.

I got bit my a dog when I was 4, veryyyy close by my eye! If I moved differently I couldve Got my eye bitten off. I dont remember the incident at all, just have seen pictures and stories from my parents. Had to get stitches, too. Guess my mom said i pet the dog wrong and aggravated it.

Our 7 year old dog bit me a few months back. We keep his cookies in the laundry room, which also has a door out to our garage. I was trying to go out the door but talking to my dad for a minute. The dog wanted to go out to get some cookies, of course. I tried to close the door and push him back inside, but he got cornered and grabbed onto the inside of my thigh. Hurt a lot. Had a hard time walking around at work the next day. I had a bruise the size of an index card for three months. Just now almost completely faded. I was a little wary of him for a few days, but we’re buds again. Now we’re hanging out for the week while the parents are on a cruise. I know he just felt cornered and would never bite me just for the hell of it, and he has never bit anyone else for any reason. My mom never found out about it. She would feel really bad, because he is her dog and then make us feel guilty for saying he was bad. Oh the mother guilt trips…

oops I didn’t fully answer your question I guess… the dog who bit me was relocated to a rural setting, I came home one day and it was a done deal. This made me very sad, because although it was scary the incident drove home the point of how much help this dog needed, and I was willing to help train him. I cried for a few weeks after that everytime I thought about him. His name was Zeus, but we nicknamed him Sidney.

I was attacked by a male German Sheperd. A family friend and I had just walked into my apartment after I had finished swimming. Perhaps, 15 minutes had past before the dog made his presence known to us. He was beneath my dining room table. Neither of us thought much about it (the dog lived in the apartment above me.) I was sitting on the floor accross from my mothers boyfriend, when out of nowhere and for no reasons (that I know of) I was attacked from behind. What I can remember is seeing the rooming spinning around. He had my head in his massive mouth and was flinging me around like a rag doll. I vaguely remember hear yelling I remember seeing what looked like a red & white loveseat. I could no longer see anything but, could hear my mothers screams. Phones gonna die to b continued! mothers boyfriend

I’ve been bitten by pets multiple times in my work in veterinary medicine (dogs, cats, birds, hamsters, snakes) and by exotics multiple times in my work in a conservation organization (ocelot, binturong, tiger).

scamp's avatar

sccrowell How horrible for you! I hope you get your phone charged soon so you can finish the post. I’d like to read the rest of what happened.

iSteve's avatar

Yeah, me too!!! Thanks everyone! I was bitten by a dog at work yesterday and needed some help putting it into perspective. Y’all rock!!!

scamp's avatar

Was it a bad bite? Not that any bite is good, but are you ok?

iSteve's avatar

Oh, I’m fine. It was a Maltese so he couldn’t really do too much damage!!!

mcbealer's avatar

syz ~ can you tell us more about your encounters with the biting tiger and ocelot? OUCH!

iSteve's avatar

Yeah, I was a bit curious about that, too!!!

scamp's avatar

I’m glad you’re ok Steve. Those little ankle biters can surprise you sometimes! I’d like to hear the tiger bite story too.

Oddly enough, the only bite that required hospitalization was from the binturong (a Southeast Asian mustelid). The bite introduced some very hot bugs that had to go off to the CDC in Atlanta – turns out they were unknown to science. Somewhere out there in a medical journal is an article with a picture of my hand in it.

scamp's avatar

I should be ashamed for not knowing what a binturong is. My High School mascot is a Bearcat!! I included a link here in case someone else wants to know what it is.

So you must have been in pretty bad shape after that bite then. How did they ever find the right medicine for you if they didn’t know the bacteria they were fighting? That must have been a horrible experience for you. Did you lose any function in that hand?

@syz: OMG!!!

syz's avatar

I have a droopy finger from the infection eating through a tendon. (I still came out better than my sister who had the end of her finger eaten by a snow leopard.) I spent a week in the hospital and then 6 weeks with a long line catheter in my arm and injected myself with cefazolin. Happily, my doctor didn’t tell me until afterwards that he was concerned about me losing the whole arm.

I don’t remember crying nor screaming out. Yet, I’m told I cried out for her to help me. (I’m crying now its hard to see the keys)

I was told that itook Mel close to 13, 14 minutes before the dog finally released me.
He had received 7stab wounds!

What I remember next was, of me being tossed into the backseat . It was a blessing we lived less the a mile from the hospital. The next thing I remember is screaming and tearing at something that was on my head. I didn’t know what it was only that it was hurting me. Perhaps I thought it was the dog. But, it wasn’t, it was the football size bandages. The doctors had kept me heavily sedated for nearly 3 weeks and decided to lessen my medication. She(my mom) told me that they had to keep me restrained. During the night. I was 6 years old when I was attacked. I have had to have 6 major reconstructive surgeries and 11 hair transplant. My last surgery was when I was 16. I have to stop for now, back to work. Will finish tonight. Sorry about the following 2 sentences.
the hospital. I was six year hers ok

You poor thing. I am so sorry this happened to you. That’s an incredibly horrible thing for one so young, well for anyone to go through. My heart aches for you.

sccrowell's avatar

First thing I’d like to say is, thank you… For ALL your kind thought and words! This isn’t a story I often tell nor is it a memory lane I like to travel down. It was just a subject that I knew all too well.

So, if it’s not past your bedtime and if you haven’t grown bored. GRAB that bowl of popcorn & a beverage of choice and sit back or kickback <grin> I’ll do my best to end this.

Ohhh…. How very rude of me, I guess, I should have asked if you wanted me to continue? If you would rather not hear any more, PLEASE, feel free to stop me at any time. How about I give you a few minutes to deside. Otherwise, this saga begins at 10:30
