Why does my Verizon Fios box keep making this noise?

My cable box keeps making an annoying, high-pitched whistle. It almost sounds like when your ears ring, and I have always been able to stop the noise by giving the cable box a good whallop. Does anyone have any knowledge or advice that could help me out?

Well, it would have to be a moving part to make a noise where hitting it would make the noise stop. So that narrows it down to the hard drive (assuming this is some DVR device) or fan. Either could fail soon so your best bet is just to get the unit replaced.
