Do you have any suggestions on a more natural look for French manicures?

Asked by DandyDear711 (1512points) October 3rd, 2010

I like French manicures but I think the white paint they airbrush on my nails is too white. What suggestions do you have to get a more natural look?

Have you tried the pink french manicure? I think they look more natural.

I guess I have not. I know I now sound stupid – but what do you mean by pink french manure?

chyna's avatar

Hehe, I think you meant manicure, not manure. I think they use a pink color instead of the white on the tips of your nails.

LOL – was that freudian on my part? So I just ask for a pink french manacure? (not manure?)

(I want some of the pink french s*$t on my nails, please.)

I hate to break it to you, but french manicures come in a sorts of colors and shades. Maybe you should have been more specific with your manicurist.

You could try doing it with pink, orange, black and white or whatever, it doesnt always need to be with the french manicure perfect.
Right now I just finished painting my nails orange base and dark blue tips. It looks amazing!

Thanks, Deja – that is kinda obvious. When you are new at something it is difficult to predict what to ask, how something is gonna look etc, That is why I am asking the question – so I can go in more knowledgeable.

So, they’re using acrylic craft paint as the white tips, yes? You can ask them to do a ‘natural look’ french manicure, instead. I think they’ll use nail polish rather than paint to do one. If you prefer the paint, I’d buy an off-white (maybe something like ‘antique white’ or ‘ivory’) at the craft store.

@augustlan – Yes – they use white acrylic craft paint and airbrush it on. I have seen it used in other places and other states.

English is not the manicurist’s first language and I do not know his language, I thought I would take a tried and true paint with me, to minimize misunderstanding. Didn’t want to buy the wrong color and have to live with it for 2 weeks.

@augustlan – thanks for your help!

One thing that might be a problem is that white paint will still be in the airbrush unless they clean it thoroughly between colors. You might want to skip the airbrushing and have them do it by hand.

I took my own bottle of slightly off white nail polish. manicurist hand painted my tips. he and i both really liked how they look – much more natural. he showed them off to his wife. now my nails don’t scream fake nails trying to look natural.

@DandyDear711 I’m glad that worked out for you. Maybe you taught your manicurist something new! FWIW, I agree with you. I prefer a more natural look, too.
