Can you think of that haunted house film title?

Asked by Anatelostaxus (1428points) October 3rd, 2010

plot (roughly):
a group of youth goes to this house mansion, turns out it’s haunted.
a scare here, a scare there….
The girl (main character) develops a certain feeling… empathy with the house or whatever’s in it… Turns out the house belonged to this bloke (guy) who hated children or something and the phantoms in the house weren’t trying to scare anyone, rather ask for help (or play trickster…whatever.)
Last scene the girl is warped up into the….. uhm… column of children-spirits.
That’s it… more or less.
It was actually not all that bad as a haunted house/fantasy film, in my opinion.
Special FX were nice… interesting concepts (such as the little children-spirits manifesting in the wooden sculptures around the girls bed, changing expression and all…
And the big bad grumpy antagonist ghost’s face manifests in the ceiling..or the fireplace…something like that.
That’s all I can remember…
Can anyone help me out?
would like to know the title to see it again..
again, cheers… my fellow curios seeker-finders.

Sounds like Rose Red by Stephen King to me (but it was a group of people with psychic abilities, not a bunch of youths).

Sounds to me to be The Haunting.

@boots has i right. LiamNeeson tricked them all. He was studyig them under different pretenses than he advrtsed. I don’t remember the female star’s name, but Kathryn (spelling?) Zeta Jones was in it and so wasOwen Wilson. I remember that he got his head knocked off by some pendulum thing in the fire place. I also remember the statue coming to life in the pool. Lots of good scary elements make up for kind of a lame story.
I liked it.

I agree with @boots. I have never seen The Haunting, but reading his link, it sounds like that may be it instead of Rose Red.

I believe it was a remake, as well.

@tragiclikebowie @Seaofclouds @Trillian @boots Indeed, your suggestion sounds convincing…
I’m now reading the overview for this title…and….
BAM, seems like that’s it.
Woah…Now that’s freaky… how could you get so much of a picture out of so little proper description….“ooooh, i think you might all be psychics toooo… ooooh”
Alright people, let’s go infest some houses together, ey?
I’ll be the big bad wolf’s ghost…

@Anatelostaxus I lack the ability to “infest” a house. I’d need about a thousand relatives. I do haunt houses on occasion, and I may come out in the steam of your cappuccino maker and infiltrate your lungs and then your brain. You’ll start hearing voices, then seeing faces in the foam fo your coffee….muahahahahaha!

@boots is right. You seem to be thinking of the 1996 movie “The Haunting”, which was based on the original (and much scarier) 1963 version. It starred Owen Wilson, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Liam Neeson and Lili Taylor. The original 1963 movie was based on the Shirley Jackson novel, “The Haunting of Hill House.” The 1963 version starred Julie Harris, Claire Bloom and Russ Tamblyn among others.

@diavolobella and you know this all by heart? (impressive)
or did you just look it up on allmovie.com after having seen the title mentioned previously by other answerers ..?

@Trillian I am very amused by the cappuccino idea… you must have a psychedelic-structured mind just like mine….
A big affectionate hug to you, fellow ‘mad-hatter’.
