I'm new to the world of girly indulgences. I live in San Francisco, so haircuts are expensive, around $55. How much should I tip my stylist--$10? less? more? And while we're on the subject, what's a standard for a manicurist?

I do 15% if it's fine, 20% if I'm very satisfied. I think I'm generous. But this is their livelihood. So I'd say 10$ is perfect if you want to make it easy.
I've been told that you don't tip the owner of the salon if they happen to be your hairdresser.
I agree that 15%-20% is fine! I occasionally increase that amount if I am especially pleased. I also tip the shampoo girl $3.00-$5.00. And, yes, it is the custom not to tip the owner. I don't know if that still applies in today's world, though.
I try to be generous but haircuts can be so expensive! I tip the Super-Cuts guy $5.00 because he’s shy, quiet and quick and I’m there for the cheap fix. I tip my Irish gal $10–15 for her $25.00 cut because she so cheap on herself with her prices. (She owns her shop).
I tip the fancy salon people $10, though I think 15–20% is correct. Those cuts are usually around $65.00 to $80.00.
i dont tip my hairdresser i just pay them what i owe them then i leave
I owned a beauty shop for a while and the people that tip will qet a better service tha those who donĀ“t when they return. Stylist $10, manicure $5 if its a regular place but luxury places expect bigger tips.
