What laptop would you recommend for $600 or less?

Asked by mayratapia_ (371points) October 10th, 2010 from iPhone

I’m entering college next semester so I need a laptop that can store a sufficient amount of memory, good battery life, and anything essential to the average college student/life. My budget is $600. Thanks.

I have a Hewlett Packer that cost $400 in Canada. I use it everyday, have downloaded movies, have my audio books on it. No trouble for 11/2 years.

I’ve found HP to be unreliable and slow, but that is my experience (and that of many reviewers)

Personally, I favor the Toshiba T235–1370 as it is lightweight, pretty quick for it’s price tag, has a battery that lasts a long time (nearly nine hours in a lab and well over six in the real world), and comes from a manufacturer that is near the top in reliability (one of only three that beats Apple in laptop reliability actually).

While the MSRP is a hair over $600 ($629.99) I got my $679.99 T135 for only $500, so shop around a little. Do not be tempted to save a few bucks by going with AMD chips in your laptop. The current crop of AMD laptop CPUs are half the speed and suck batteries quickly compared to their Intel counterparts.
