Can a voice memo be used as a ringtone on the iPhone 3GS?

Asked by ItalianPrincess1217 (11979points) May 15th, 2011 from iPhone

I want to record my baby’s heartbeat at my appointment on Monday and use it as a ringtone. Please tell me this is possible with the iPhone 3GS. I’ve been trying to do it but can’t find anything that says “set as ringtone”. Why can’t things just be simple? Any other ordinary phone has this feature…

Take the recording and put it into itunes, then, right click and click “Create AAC” version. Then, drag the new file onto the desktop. Rename it from ”.m4a” to ”.m4r”, and you have a ringtone file. Then, drag that file back into itunes, and next time you sync you should have that new ringtone in your phone. Another Helpful thing, if you can’t see the ”.m4a” extention when editing the file, find out how to display file extentions in your OS. (I’m guessing you are on windows)

If you can’t figure out how to do this I can make the ringtone file for you, but its pretty straight forward., although I am a major techy. I don’t get why itunes doesn’t have this feature.

@XOIIO Thanks! I’ll try that. I have to wait until tomorrow after I actually have the heartbeat recording. I can’t understand why on earth there’s no way to simply do it from the phone itself. Seems so ridculous!

@ItalianPrincess1217 Apple loves to limit their products. If you have a jailbroken iDevice you can download cydia packages that turn any song or recording into a ringtone, otherwise you have to do it this way. That’s why I always jailbreaky my iPods, it makes them way more worth the money.

@XOIIO I was always too scared to jailbreak it. I’ve heard bad things…should I do it? You think it’s worth it?

@ItalianPrincess1217 absolutely worth it! Make sure you know how to work cydia and everything liek that before you do, and always check if an IOS is jailbreakable before upgrading, I usually only upgrade the OS if there is an extremely major change, my iPod is running 4.3.1 and I suggest you chose that OS as well. There are plenty of great guides to jailbreaking. As for bad things, not really, jsut back up your device before you jailbreak it. If you have any other questions feel free to PM me
