Just what would you buy with 10 thousand dollars?

Asked by Aethelflaed (13755points) December 10th, 2011

As you may have heard, Mitt Romney just tried to bet Rick Perry $10,000 like most people bet $20 in the latest Republican Debate.

So what would you buy with $10,000? A car? Education? Pay off some debt? Down payment on a home? Health insurance? 25 new iPhone 4S’s? Serious answers, actual strife, silliness, and intense mockery are all allowed, and even encouraged!

I’d pay off what debt I have. So to answer the question, freedom for debt.

digitalimpression's avatar

I’d put it in the bank and hope it would earn enough interest to eventually get me out of debt.

Bellatrix's avatar

I would pay it off my mortgage.

ANef_is_Enuf's avatar

Pay off debt.

JLeslie's avatar

Create my website and hopefully have some money left over,

ETpro's avatar

@digitalimpression Not a chance. The dent you owe is generally running between 6% and 21% or more. You;ll be lucky to earn 1% on a savings account ot only $10,000/ Every year , you would slide deeper into the dent chasm. Retire as much dent as you can as soon as you can, so long as you don’t leave yourself fhort of money to live and end up borrowing more..

Bellatrix's avatar

@ETpro is absolutely right. Get rid of your debt and you are saving yourself money.

Berserker's avatar

Save it for when I have badass debts to pay lol. And I WILL have them. Ain’t called student loans for nothing haha.

linguaphile's avatar

I’d buy my kids and me a trip to Europe! First stop, UK… then somehow get to Italy and Greece.

[I wouldn’t pay off debts because… debt’s always there and money always goes to one debt or another. 10K to spend on making memories and teaching my kids something about the world… priceless]

zenvelo's avatar

Payoff debts I owe. Or a substantial down payment on a car. I really need a new car.

JLeslie's avatar

@linguaphile Although I agree travel is a wonderful experience to have with your kids and in general. If you pay off your debt you will have more money in the end. More money to travel 2 and 3 places. Unless your debts have ridiculously low interest rates, then maybe it doesn’t matter much. There is not always debt, I have zero debt. Well, I did for a few years, we actually have a leased car we just got a few months ago, but we have the money in the bank to pay it off if we wanted too.

jonsblond's avatar

I would buy a reliable car. Our one and only is dying a slow death.

linguaphile's avatar

@JLeslie I guess I’m one of the people who will have debt for a long time… student loans will keep me there for another 20 years. Single mom-hood on my current income will also keep me there until my youngest is old enough to earn money for herself, too. My debts, right now, are really low-interest and I am credit-card-debt-free. For me, it’s just a reality; it’d be great if one day I’ll be able to say the same as you.

jonsblond's avatar

@linguaphile I would also take the vacation with the kids and memories over paying debt. Children grow so quickly. You don’t get a second chance with them. =)

lillycoyote's avatar

Luckily I am currently debt free, and others might question or disagree with my choice, but it is not theirs to make; it’s not even mine to make, since I don’t actually have $10,000 dollars lying around, but If I did have $10,000 lying around, right now I would by one $10,000 or two $5,000 triple A rated munis, most likely from my own state which has very highly rated municipal bonds.

Sunny2's avatar

I would buy one half a car and rent the other half.

judochop's avatar

New interior for my car. Probably a snake skin headliner.

augustlan's avatar

Too many choices! New (to me) car to replace my unreliable one? Some much needed medical tests/treatment? Desperately needed home repairs/improvements? Pay off a fraction of my debt? ACK!

lillycoyote's avatar

@Sunny2 LOL. I would have thought of that with maybe a duplex but not a car. That’s some real entrepreneurial thinking there; and mind you, I had to look that one up. Entrepreneurial is not a word I could spell correctly on the first try if my life depended on it. :-)

KateTheGreat's avatar

Give it to whoever needed it the most. I’m not in immediate need of the money, so I’d give it to someone who is in debt or can’t afford things for their families. Seems most reasonable.

jazmina88's avatar

Debt and mortgage…..I have one of those variable rates, they should give the dough to me

jonsblond's avatar

@augustlan The 10K goes quickly when it’s needed. Doesn’t it. :/

augustlan's avatar

@jonsblond For real. It’s so depressing to realize it wouldn’t even make a damn dent.

Cancun vacation with a certain special someone.

jonsblond's avatar

It is now officially my 3 year anniversary with this site. Drinks are on me thanks to Mitt! How much booze will 10K buy? :P

Berserker's avatar

@jonsblond Not enough to fuck me up.

Congrats on the 3 year Fluther anniversary, friend. :)

lillycoyote's avatar

@jonsblond How much booze would MItt approve of you drinking?

jonsblond's avatar

@lillycoyote Probably none. He is Mormon. My best friend is Mormon and we couldn’t drink soda at her house when we were kids. Her mom would make the bed shake upstairs with her husband while fornicating, but not under the influence of Coca Cola! Caffeine and alcohol are evil!

Hypocrisy_Central's avatar

• New glasses
• Strong beater (don’t want to blow it all on some car)
• Complete my set of Prismacolor Design markers.
• Get Squeaky spayed.
• Patent my invention.
• Some sexy heels for my fiancée.
• Take $500 to the casino.

(if there is any left over, I am sure I can put it to some good use)

I would give the money back. The money belongs to the person I took it from.

I’d be able to buy that house I want, and not worry about being on the bubble of, “Will they accept my lowball bid?”.

Cosmetic surgery for my wife.

I would buy the largest Toblerone known to man.

Pay debt, and more clothes….lol.

HungryGuy's avatar

Put as a down payment on a new car.

jerv's avatar

I would use half to pay of debt (I don’t owe much), put some away for a rainy day, and spend about a grand on hookers and blow.

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

I’d pay off a lot of debt, put some into my “house fund” and buy a bag of Lindt Lindor truffles.

RealEyesRealizeRealLies's avatar

I’d immediately purchase some form of physical asset which I believed would rise in value over time. I’ve never lost investing in vintage camera lenses.

Travellers cheques?

Neizvestnaya's avatar

A newer car for my mom.

A used car for the stepkids to share.

A trip for my mom, sister and I to see my grandparents.

Payoff our 2012 cruise.

Stinley's avatar

I’d pay off debt. But I’d hopefully have enough to get my teeth done too. I have British teeth. Worse, in fact – they are Scottish teeth
