How do you insert earplugs properly?

Asked by tan253 (2958points) January 26th, 2012

I’ve been looking online about proper insertion of earplugs and most sites will say that you shouldn’t see any of the earplug past that weird little sticky out bit before the canal. Well when I insert mine it goes all the way out. I twist them and make sure they are as small as I can get them, insert them in but they always expand out. I“m using the foam ones that have mushroom end, not sure how to insert photos.

I cant’ for the life of me figure out how to insert it so you don’t see any sticking out of my ear – does anyone know?
Or with those ones in particular should you have some coming out of your ear?

Thanks

I twist them, then hold them in place for a few seconds to wait until they expand and won’t fall/slip out.

According to OSHA, you should roll the earplug as tight as possible, the hold it in your ear for one minute to allow it to expand properly. Then repeat for the other ear. Personally, I’ve found 20 seconds to be more than enough time.
