What suggestions do you have for removing candle wax from a brick hearth?

Asked by Pied_Pfeffer (28144points) July 12th, 2012

Candle wax dripped down from from the fire place mantle. The bulk of it was chipped away. Unfortunately, there is still some residue within the rough surface of the bricks and is noticeable.

I’ve tried using an iron and a hair dryer to warm it up and dab at it with paper towels. Is there anything else you can suggest to get it out?

Have you tried laying down a piece of rag and running the iron over that? It seems like the wax should melt and be absorbed by the material.

Pour boiling hot water on it and use an old terry cloth towel to sop it up.

@syz Thanks for the tip. The iron trick isn’t working, even with a paper towel and then a cotton t-shirt.

@YARNLADY I haven’t tried the hot water yet. I’ll give it a go in a bit. Maybe the hot water first to get into the crevices and soften up the wax and then the iron with an absorbent towel or t-shirt will work.

Thank you both! I’ll let you know if it makes a difference.
