Did the Bush Administration really do this?

Asked by ScottyMcGeester (1897points) April 18th, 2013

I happened to just be watching Jon Stewart, I seldom ever watch TV, and he had Jimmy Carter as his guest.

Somewhere down the line in the conversation, Stewart brought up North Korea. Carter said how he helped Clinton draft a treaty/negotiation/whatever you want to call it with North Korea. However, when Bush arrived, Bush (and/or his administration) practically “dumped” the negotiation in the wastebasket and labeled North Korea as an “Axis of Evil.”

I want to know the accuracy of this story.

Bush lumped Iran, Iraq, and North Korea together as the Axis of Evil in his 2002 State of the Union address.

There was promise late in the Clinton years of a breakthrough by Madeline Albright with North Korea. However, Clinton’s term ended. When Bush took over, a large part of his administration did not want anything to do with any progress in any area made by the Clinton Administration.

Bush suspended any talks with N Korea until a complete review of foreign policy could be conducted. And then there was never a consensus on North Korea within the White House, and thus nothing really happened for eight years.

Read this report from 2009.

*This is a really good synapsis.

President George W. Bush removed North Korea from the U.S. terrorist list as a compromise to the Hermit Kingdom to halt its missile and nuclear weapons development programs.

The Bush administration can be blamed for this same inept, bone-headed attitude relative to the mountain of information offered to them in regard to al-Qaeda by the Clinton administration when the White House changed hands in January 2001.

Richard Clarke was an advisor to presidents Reagan, Bush I, Clinton, and Bush II. In his 2011 book ‘Against All Enemies’, he states that a massive amount of gathered intelligence regarding al-Qaeda and the real looming threat to the U.S. was offered to the incoming Bush team, and they basically said “No thanks. We will perform our own investigations.”

During 2001, they proceeded to form committees full of people who did not get along with each other, and dealt with that by just switching-out people from the different committees. Essentially nothing was learned or achieved for the next seven months, and then 3,000 of our citizens were murdered on Sept 11.

Number of people held accountable:

Zero.

@KNOWITALL You’re linking to a college research paper by some dude named Ed Shin and the World News Daily as your sources…?

@KNOWITALL World News Daily is about as an authoritative a source as the State News of the DPRK. They are a notorious source of right-wing fake propaganda and outright fabrications.

The neocons held firm command of the Bush foreign policy and they wanted war. They wanted to knock of Iraq, Iran, and Syria and hoped they could provoke a war with North Korea in such a way as to keep China neutral. Afghanistan just got added to their wish list due to unforeseen circumstances that they would have foreseen except for Bush’s monumental incompetence and the pigheaded nature of the advisers he surrounded himself with.

So, I guess the conclusion that can be drawn from all of the above answers is: YES. the Bush administration really did do this.

Yes, BUSH & CHENEY did do ALL of these things & they added TORTURE to the mix. Then they deregulated Wall Street & brought the Economy crashing down around our ears in the United States (and we may never fully recover, especially since the Republicans are firmly in control in Congress).

I agree with Linda Owl! also George W. was not qualified to be President, I mean his IQ is probably somewhere in the 60 to 70 range… and Cheney is nuts, he likes shooting his own friends.. and so mean he won’t die – isn’t he running on batteries now?

@strangeuniverse The best part about Cheney shooting his friend in the face is that his friend APOLOGIZED TO CHENEY
