When you're out and about by yourself, running errands, having lunch, whatever, do you look at your phone often? Infrequently? When you're with friends and/or family, doing whatever you do, do you look at your phone a lot or infrequently?

I thought of this today when I was having lunch at a Panera. I was looking at my phone, looking at Facebook and Fluther (the two sites I frequent most). I was thinking about how I enjoy just sitting there, looking out the window, but now with the phone I tend to check it or look at sites.
When I’m with family or friends, I check it infrequently, which is, almost never. We will sometimes discuss something and then google it, but I won’t sit there and message people or look at Facebook or anything like that in the company of friends or family.
It made me curious about the habits of other Jellies.
When you’re alone, running errands, having lunch, or home alone, doing whatever you do, do you look at your phone a lot? When you’re with family or friends, do you frequently check your phone? Sometimes? Almost never?

I’m one of the last to not carry a cell phone so when I am out and about I chat up others or just go about my business or, if I am in a cafe or coffee place I might take some reading material like the local News & review paper. I usually leave my laptop at home as well unless I am traveling for more than a few days. I used to take my laptop to my local bakery/cafe and fluther while enjoying a goodie once in awhile but I haven’t done that forever now.
At home… every… waking. .. moment.
Not that much at all.
I do use it to check the time,I don’t, use it all for internet.
When I’m running errands I usually don’t check it much at all. I can go hours not looking at my phone.
If I’m eating lunch out alone, I would be likely to check while waiting for the food.
When I’m at work I sometimes go 2–4 hours without looking at my phone.
At home I’m on the internet a lot. Too much. I’m on my phone often, because my iPad is on life support. I would much rather not use my phone for the internet at home, but I’m too cheap to buy a new device right now.
Never (but I am very 20th century).
I turn off my data when I am outside.
Basically only to tell the time since my watch needs repair. I do that with friends or not, but i am not fiddling with it no matter if I am alone or with people.
I don’t have one, but if I did, I assume I would probably check it often, yeah.
Only occasionally when it buzzes. i usually forget to turn the ringer back on if I had muted it. I look to see who it is/was and then let it take a message for me.
Mine died a few weeks ago, so I guess not much. You want to see me call in person.
When I’m alone I look at my phone often, but when I’m with others I keep it in my pocket. I think it’s rude when someone is sitting across from you to look at your phone.
No, but there is no reason to check it frequently. Others may have valid reasons to do so, so there there is no judgement upon my part unless they are driving.
When I’m alone, I check my phone frequently. After all there’s no one around me. I don’t check my phone while running errands, but whike waiting I do.
When I’m with my family I don’t check my phone unless we are at home and each person has something to do. I don’t use phone around friends either.
I just have an old fashioned flip phone that I only use for very important phone calls when I am out. So yeh, I never check it. Then again, ask me how often I am on the internet at home :p
When I’m home, I rarely look at the phone. I figure if someone I know really needs to reach me, they know my home number. I will check the phone occasionally to see if there’s a text, but usually there’s not. The phone will usually spend the overnight in my pocketbook or on the charger.
Rarely if ever. Haven’t even touched it since Thursday night when I placed it on the counter.
I’m the same as @Coloma, no cell phone on me!! I have a house phone and hate answering that so I see no need to have a cell or text. I guess I am kinda disgusted with so many people walking around in the world not even noticing there is a world. Their life has become this little portable device. It’s sad really :(
@Jillybean Haha..touche! There ought to a club for those of us that have not stepped into the land of cell phones. What really cracks me up is watching my horsey friends riding their horses around their arena and and texting while in the saddle. Kinda like driving and texting. Better pay attention or your horse might go one way and you are going to go the other. A 4 horse pile up. haha
Across the street from my daughter’s school is a fancy horse farm. I often see ladies riding English and looking at their phones at the same time. It’s so funny to see them with their helmets, riding clothes and boots and looking down, fascinated at their phones. I guess there are few activities nowadays where people are not distracted by their phones.
@jca Haha..I know, it is so funny. Over here we have about 5 competitive show riders that are always working their horses and texting too. Hilarious!
Carefull @Jillybean don’t dis the wonderful cell phone here, I get all kinds of shit when I do, people seem to love them more than their own kids,if I didn’t need mine for work I wouldn’t have one either,on my weekends it’s in my pocket but turned OFF.
I do on the other hand do turn it on once in a while on days off but for mainly getting the time, since I don’t wear a watch.
Haha @SQUEEKY2 !! I will tread lightly on the cell phones because there are legit reasons for them and as a safety feature they are great but I also see so many that have stopped interacting with the real people in their life and spend a lot of time doing the wrist twist in an effort to see if their phone can validate their lives. I certainly don’t begrudge the time wasted checking for nothing. There’s good, bad, and moderation in everything & some people are just nuts about their phones! Thanks for the heads-up.
There’s no reason for me to look at my phone unless it rings or beeps (missed call or voicemail).
I use the original Motorola Razr with no internet or texting.
I even gave up on email for a few months, but I check it some now.
