Should the world sanction the US, until its president stops making nuclear threats? (Details)

Asked by MrGrimm888 (19437points) January 2nd, 2018

Trump repeatedly threatens to use nuclear weapons on North Korea. This is a clear threat to international peace.

The American people cannot control their president. Should the world check him?

Trump Tweeted more thinly veiled threats, to Kim (NK) on Tuesday. He’s obviously not interested in a diplomatic solution. Shouldn’t the world take Trump’s threats as they do Kim’s?

Iran was also sanctioned, to reign in their nuclear weapons program.

The US, is the only country to have actually used a nuclear weapon. Now, the POTUS is threatening to use them again. Is this not something that the world should see as a situation needing immediate action?

North Korea will eventually need to be obliterated. I don’t believe you can pacify NK with world treaty. I support USA’s war against NK and I’m not even its citizen. This endless political ping-pong between those two countries probably can’t be resolved without taking a bit of drastic measure. Remember the saying “The end justifies the means”, and that is for the goodness of the whole world (except NK, obviously). If war is the only surefire way to end this conflict then war it is.

The rest of the world is stuck with America and its uncomfortable reality in being “too big to fail”. But clearly the world is moving on as our incremental failures pile up in our relentless decline. It is in fact beyond poetic justice that Trump should be handed command of the Titanic adrift in the iceberg infested sea of world diplomacy. But this is truly an exceptional and fascinating era to live through, as the rest of the world is confronted with the necessity of mounting a pretense of Trump as “normal”. But regardless of all facades around diplomatic requirement, it is impossible to miss the ironic truth of Trump as symbolic of an America that has clearly lost lts way.

The bad news and the good news is that Trump lies all the time. Nothing that he says should be taken at face value. In any event, it is just words, and as much as I despise Trump, you can’t impose sanctions based only on words.

The latest out of North Korea is that they have reopened their telephone hot line to South Korea and will be meeting with South Korea. I would not read too much into this, but it is a hopeful sign. Maybe the new set of sanctions is having an effect.

rojo's avatar

Who is going to impose the sanctions? Countries that take our foreign aid? Countries that have a huge trade surplus with us? Countries that have their own currency tied to the dollar?

What difference does it or would it make if Estonia and Pakistan and Iran decide to sanction us? And even if they could convince other nations to go along with it do you think we would not veto it in the UN?

Oh wait, you said “should” in which case the answer is “Yes, they should”.

ragingloli's avatar

A global trade and travel embargo against the colonies, both in and out.

kritiper's avatar

North Korea is the threat, not the US. Your question is nonsensical.

elbanditoroso's avatar

Sure, the rest of the world should but they won’t. Too dependent on the US.

It wouldn’t be effective in the first place, and Trump wouldn’t understand it’s significance anyway,

Jaxk's avatar

N.Korea continues to threaten a nuclear attack. You don’t see that as a threat to world peace. But if Trump threatens to respond to any attack, you see that as a threat to world peace. I can’t follow your logic or lack thereof.

LostInParadise's avatar

We already have sanctions on North Korea. They are not based on anything that Kim Jong Un has said, but on his development of a nuclear capability.

rojo's avatar

@Jaxk A matter of perspective. NK may or may not actually have a functioning ICBM that may or may not be able to hit an island in the middle of the ocean, let alone reach the US mainland. While the US, which also has a petty narcissist with an unstable mind with his finger on the button, has 1800 missiles deployed and another 4–5k stockpiled. NK can take out a medium sized town if it is lucky, the US can instigate global nuclear holocaust within seconds. Now, which is the greater threat to the existence of humanity?

MrGrimm888's avatar

^Correct. I’m trying to get some of us to see the US, like we view other countries. If you look at it unbiased, we appear to need a global response.

@Jaxk . Do you think threatening to destroy another country, is an appropriate form of diplomacy from a world leader?

flutherother's avatar

Trump’s childish mind is fascinated by the large red button that sits on his desk. I don’t have a problem with that except it is connected directly to 6,800 nuclear bombs. Someone should cut the wire.

MrGrimm888's avatar

^Supposedly, the people who carry out the orders, are supposed to take into account the person who gave the order, and their state of mind, before launching the weapons…

So. Whatever that means to you….

ragingloli's avatar

You are talking about the kind of people who will happily throw puppies off cliffs.

@MrGrimm888 Last November, for the first time in 40 years, Congress examined the president’s authority to launch a nuclear attack.
One of the experts was C Robert Kehler, commander of the US Strategic Command from 2011–13.
He told the committee that, as trained, he would follow the president’s nuclear order – but only if it were legal.
Under certain circumstances, he explained: “I would have said ‘I’m not ready to proceed.’”
One senator asked: “Then what happens?” Mr Kehler admitted: “I don’t know.”

The committee laughed in response.

josie's avatar

Absolutely.

Otherwise the Kim family might be hesitant to starve and imprison North Koreans, spend money on nuclear research that the world sends to them for food and oil (since they produce neither), and threaten S. Korea, Japan and the US with nuclear attack.

Shut this asshole Trump down before he fucks it up for the eccentric but obviously well intentioned third generation Kim lunatic.

Jaxk's avatar

@MrGrimm888 – I can’t help but wonder what you think we should do if Kim does send a nuclear missile to Guam, Hawaii, or San Francisco. Trump said he would blow them away. You obviously don’t like that response so what would you do? Should we send them money like we did with Iran?

We’ve been trying to be diplomatic with these guys for 60 years, it hasn’t worked. Yet you want to push a narrative that anyone that doesn’t continue the strategy that hasn’t worked is crazy. Frankly continuing the same failed policy hoping for different result is the definition of crazy.

The sky is not falling.

MrGrimm888's avatar

^I didn’t say the sky was falling.

There have been zero ramifications for the US, from NK regardless of US leadership. Kim ,and his father, both were no more than sabre rattlers. There has been, and likely would not have been any of this leader to leader twitter fight, without our moron and chief.

Regardless of the success of previous diplomatic engagements with North Korea, all out war has not been tabled until now. Trump is allowing himself to fall prey to the taunts from a dictator who is selling his nuclear program as a deterrent from people like Trump. Trump’s rhetoric validates Kim’s stance. It validates the prioritization of the country’s nuclear program over food. Kim no longer needs,to manufacture lies to tell his citizens. Trump is strengthening their brainwashing tactics.

And by the way, yes. Playing with nuclear war IS CRAZY. Shouldn’t take a genius to figure that out.

If left to gave his tantrum, kicking by himself, Kim wouldn’t be threatening the US mainland with a realistic threat. The acceleration of his weapons programs is a direct reaction to Trump’s knee jerk actions, and childlike poking from Twitter.

kritiper's avatar

@MrGrimm888 Trump has only been in office one year. Kim Jong Un’s buildup has been going on longer than that, as has been many other items on that subject.

MrGrimm888's avatar

^Yes. Only one year. But he has escalated things greatly. Kim was mad at Obama because of sanctions. Obama never personally insulted Kim. The twitter comments have clearly gotten under Kim’s skin, and may have led to the massive acceleration of NK’s nuclear program.

Is it coincidence that they could barely launch a missile before, and now they have ICBM capabilities? Something changed. The only thing I know of, is Trump fanning the flames. It seemed to make Kim hasten the research.

While it is true that NK has been an issue for decades, the issue has been punted by all former administrations. Now that it’s Trump’s turn, he is not even trying to be peaceful. His tactics and rhetoric are forcing Kim into a corner. Kim has just as fragile of an ego as Trump. Constantly poking him will probably get a response. The situation requires tact. Millions of lives are at stake. Trump has blatantly said he will use nuclear weapons. He is essentially giving a very stupid and dangerous man an ultimatum. Kim will feel obligated to act, or lose power. It didn’t have to be that way. We increased sanctions. We could let them take effect before calling Kim out.

Trump is acting this way, because he’s playing with house money. He knows that it won’t be him that has to back up his words. Trump is accustomed to power, not concessions or diplomacy. He is in WAY over his head, and his “style,” is provocation, and bullying. That style has no place in this situation. Trump thinks he can bully Kim. Kim would probably rather die, than lose face. Kim is nothing less than a living god, in his country. Any backing down would blunt his reputation, if his people found out. Any sign of weakness could invite a revolt, or a change in leadership.

Remember. Kim was not supposed to take over when his father died. It was his older brother. Bit he was seen as too feminine/weak, and too obsessed with western culture. Kim was elevated, because he was more capable of being the ruthless dictator required to run the country as it has been running. Kim has killed untold numbers of his own advisors, generals, and even family. He clearly is morally corrupt, and doesn’t value any life. It’s hard to threaten a leader who doesn’t care if all his people die. Kim could easily be pressed into going out in a blaze of glory. Trump is pushing him too much.

The Olympics are coming to South Korea. Kim tried playing nice, and opened the line between himself and South Korea. Just as it seemed progress was being made, Trump threw out the “my button” tweet, keeping tension high…

So… Will the world watch a dumb old man kick a hornets nest, and let us all get bitten?

kritiper's avatar

@MrGrimm888 This old man you speak of is the United Nations. And it is the hornet’s nest that’s doing the kicking.

MrGrimm888's avatar

^No. The UN doesn’t do the tweeting. The hornets nest, is just what it is. If the UN really did it’s job, there would already have been international involvement in NK. Not to mention many other countries.

The US, has a leader that has access to nukes, and has told the world that he will use them against another sovereign nation. What is there to debate?

kritiper's avatar

^No debate required. Your “data” is skewed. Get it right and quit spreading fake news.

MrGrimm888's avatar

^What “fake news” am I spreading?

kritiper's avatar

The North Korean issue has been building for years ever since the conflict was suspended by a cease fire. Every other president up to Trump has only been sidestepping the issue, sweeping it under the rug for the time being, for someone else to deal with.
Kim Jong-Un and his forebears have always been yanking the UN’s chain because they don’t like to be talked down to. They want to control the entire Korean peninsula, and have since they first invaded South Korea before hostilities began in 1950.
And now, do they want to talk directly to the UN? NO! They want to dictate terms to the world and hold the world hostage to the threat of their nuclear weapons. And they have singled out the US for direct threats because they see the US and the most powerful nation on earth. They must think that if they can show the world how the US will kiss their butts, then the whole world will follow with lips puckered.
And you say it’s Trump’s (and the US’s) fault?
DUDE!
You need to study your history!

MrGrimm888's avatar

^When did I blame Trump for the Korean War? Dude. You need to study my posts…

I already mentioned that previous administrations, “punted” the NK problem.

What I am saying, is that Trump’s remarks are exacerbating the issue. And he has publicly threatened to use nuclear weapons. Any other leader doing that would be held accountable.

Trump’s handling of the situation is a major threat to global security, and to the lives of millions of South Koreans, Japanese, and Americans.

When someone is a threat to millions of lives, the typical global reaction is to check said person. Especially in regards to weapons of mass destruction.

You can’t tell me you actually think world leaders feel safer with Trump as POTUS. If the world won’t hold him accountable, who will?

I wondered why the we weren’t sanctioned after the 2nd Iraq war. The US seems to have the world by the short and curlies. As Trump is a separatist, now would be a good time to try to tame the US.

kritiper's avatar

You didn’t blame Trump for the Korean War, and I didn’t say you did.
A state of war has existed in Korea since 1950. Kim Jong-Un wants South Korea. And he doesn’t want anyone standing in his way.
“Trump repeatedly threatens to use nuclear weapons on North Korea.”
North Korea started this this thing YEARS ago, so don’t blame Trump for threatening to put an end it.
You’re twisting the facts, and in many cases, ignoring them. That’s fake news!
You’re obviously anti- US so that makes your opinions biased. More fake news!

MrGrimm888's avatar

^Being anti-war, is anti-US. You aren’t sounding smart here…

rojo's avatar

^^ Unfortunately, @MrGrimm888 that is not a new phenomena. In some circles being anti-war has been considered un-American for a long time now and we continue to be called unpatriotic for not supporting American Corporate expansionism worldwide.

MrGrimm888's avatar

^Agreed. Sadly….
