^^ Beat me to it! Cokes all around!
The Cassandra Crossing is a seriously underrated movie about disease. It is about a virus developed in a lab that gets spread out to the public because some stupid hipsters decided to break into a government’s hospital and make a mess. Fortunately, the virus only manages to creep onto a train. Unfortunately, this means everyone on the train has to be quarantined, and during the quarantine time horrible things happens and the dark depth of human psyche is revealed.
I can understand why the movie doesn’t get much love. It turns into a cheesy action movie toward the end and all the seriousness suddenly goes away. But the more you think of the movie as a whole, the more disturbing it becomes, especially when it manages to nail down a lot of horrifying issues of this current virus if you think about it and the virus in the movie literally attacks the respiratory system much like Corona virus :’(.
What are the issues? Here’s a SPOILER FOR THE MOVIE:
- Mass hysteria over nothing: The virus can kill very quickly, but it later turns out that it’s actually very easy to be killed. You just need to breathe a lot of fresh air and the virus will just die. It can only kill people who are too old or too weak. But people just look at the dead people an conclude that the virus is a death sentence, causing a mass hysteria and preventing the doctors from dealing with it.
– Government’s secrecy: The virus is developed by the government to fight against terrorists, and it’s a secret project. So when the virus spreads to the train, the government decides to quarantine the entire train and set the train to somewhere remote. In reality, the place they choose is a broken bridge. They plan to kill everyone on the train to hide the secret about the virus! It looks too extreme to be true, but the idea of the government hiding something is actually a possibility to consider.
– The law vs the public’s well-being: The government puts some soldiers on the train to ensure order. And the soldiers are so rigid they won’t do anything unless the general tell them to. At one point of the movie the government finds out the cure, and the general decides to stop the train. But the communication line between the train and the military base is broken due to a fight between the soldiers and a passenger. So when the doctors on the train independently know about the cure, they can’t convince the soldiers to stop the quarantine because the soldiers just refuse to listen to anyone who isn’t the general, leading to the cheesy action scenes.
– The fear of being quarantined: Some people are just so scared of the disease they delude themselves into thinking they are fine. They just refuse to cooperate with the doctors for examination because they fear they actually get the virus. Some of them die, and further spreading the virus to other people who are also afraid of getting it and repeat the cycle.
^That’s the only one I haven’t heard of so far. Thank you!
“The man who had a cough, and it’s just a cough, and he’s fine”, by Mitchell and Webb.
Here’s the 50 second movie theater scene from Outbreak.
Yikes!
Let’s not forget Stephen King’s The Stand which was a superb book and a pretty good miniseries.

I’m sorry, just let me leave quietly
Everyone above covered my movie suggestions.
I highly recommend the TV series Counterpart. One of the worlds went through a serious epidemic, or pandemic, and it shows the differences between the two worlds. That’s not the main theme, but it is a predominant theme in the series.
It’s so good. It originally was on Starz, I don’t know if it can still be seen on demand. Maybe it’s on Amazon prime or one of those other services?
It takes place in Berlin, so it’s very earthly while still having sci-fi element. It’s English speaking, once in a while they use German and there are subtitles.

28 Days Later.
Also enjoyed the Blade series which is diseased vampires (Reapers.) Depends on what you’re looking for.
The Crazies. I prefer the remake.
“Phantoms” movie with Ben Affleck and Peter O’Toole. It’s sci-fi horror based on a Dean Koontz book.
