Are gasoline pumps with TVs spewing advertising showing up in your area?

Asked by LuckyGuy (43863points) January 5th, 2022

I am noticing that Speedway stations have begun installing these loud, obnoxious TVs on their fuel pumps. They advertize stuff I don’t and never will need.
Filling up at the gas station was one of the few places where you were not faced with a TV blaring at you. I liked that. I could think or hum to myself or talk with my passengers or look around for situational awareness. Those stupid TV pumps put a stop to that.
Kwik-Fill does not have them so I will make sure to go there and avoid Speedway.

Do those TVs bother you? Has there been one thing that made you think “I need to buy that.”?
Why are they so damn loud?!

No. Not yet. Thank God.

Be on the lookout. I’m sure it’s coming.
I put my hand over the speaker to quiet it down a bit.

No because Jersey girls still don’t pump their own gas!

They have been around for a good dozen years in Californian. Started with Shell stations, but has not gained much traction.

They are about as popular as the TV in the back seat of a New York cab.

For three years or more, some have Cheddar News.

I saw some of it two or three years ago, but not now

I have seen them and I absolutely hate them.

Side comment – I also hate that all doctors’ and dentists’ offices now have tvs on. If I’m waiting, I want to read and I can’t stand the distracting noise.

I don’t gas up at Shell stations because of them.

I enjoy the news they provide while getting gas. Gotta love Speedway! I never go anywhere else.

Maybe. There’s some kind of screen on the pump showing something but I’m too busy pumping gas, washing windows and looking my car over.

@LuckyGuy You are my people. I have complained about this. I use the call button on the pump and ask that the music or other advertising/music be turned off or turned down. You should hear the replies from the young people working in those stores. They can’t even imagine it’s offensive to anyone. One woman stood up on the counter to get a good look at me. True. Laughing thinking about it.

Yes, for a few years now. They spew out “news” from Cheddar or GSTV (oh so clever). Some show brief clips from Saturday Night Live or the late night talk shows. Maria Menounos (who’s actually my friend’s cousin) pops in for fashion tips or celebrity gossip.

They are completely obnoxious but this is just part of the price we pay for DVRs and Smart TVs. As soon as we gained the ability to fast forward through or mute commercials, advertisers and media companies got busy building new platforms to sell their stuff to us on.

Haven’t seen that at all here in Canada but who knows in time, hope it will be a few years still but ya never know.

They’ve been here for around 10 years.

One thing I like about getting gas at Costco is they don’t do this, plus their gas is cheaper.

Forever_Free's avatar

Yes. Some of them are so loud that I stopped going there for gas.

Sometimes it’s not ads, it’s stupid gossipy news. Sometimes it says “stop inside the cafe for a hot dog” or something like that.
