Should I call the cops if I hear screaming outside my house?
I’ve lived in the woods most of my life, and have never heard a sound like this. It sounded like a women screaming/moaning. I looked up some sounds foxes and cougars make and they sounded somewhat similar. I can’t be 100% it wasn’t a person though. Should I call the cops?

I’d call. “There’s a loud noise in the woods near my house. I think it’s very likely a wild animal, but I can’t rule out that it could be a woman.”
I once heard a bobcat when crashing over at my friend’s house out in the sticks. It sounded like a child calling “hello?” over and over again, It was weird and I’ve never heard it before or since.
Scream back if you’re concerned that it might be a person.
An excited fox makes a noise that would sound like screaming. If in doubt, step outside and call out. If it IS a person and they need help they will let you know. If it isn’t, all you did was scare some wildlife.
If you’ve always lived in the woods, than you should already know what a screech owl sounds like. Have you ruled out screech owl?
Well, @Cindy1302 – what did you do? What was it?
You can’t just leave us hanging.
Your call. Injured rabbits scream like human babies.
Are you near a lake? A loon sounds like that.
Sure. No need to check with Fluther folks first. You are an adult and if you are concerned about a noise out in the woods I’m sure the cops will take what they deem to be appropriate action.
I called the cops, but no one showed.

I guess that is what they deemed to be appropriate.
@Cindy1302: It’s possible the cops went but didn’t consult with you, they just looked and left.
