Does my house have a ghost?

Asked by kevbo (25672points) March 27th, 2009

I live in the creakiest m-fing house right now. It was built in 2002, and it’s got a lot of reasons to creak including being located in a river floodplain and being near a major traffic artery. There’s a lot of evidence of shifting with drywall and seam cracks. It also has radiant floor heat and two stories.

But dammit if it doesn’t seem like things are going bump in the night. Every night and especially late at night. I’ve never seen anything move or doors open or shut, but damn.

So, how can I rule out a ghost and stop jumping at every other sound?

Who you gonna call? Ghostbusters (If these guys can’t find your ghost, no one can)

essieness's avatar

Oh Kev. You should totally call these guys.

I watched a couple of episode of that show. Freaked. Me. Out. (and yes I know it’s television)

Yes. Ghosts are real. 9_9

Hey… It’s made out of wood! What does wood do when wet, cold, hot or dry. It’s only logic that it will make noise if it expands or contracts. The hous has a ghost called environment.

It’s just physics. The sump pump runs. The heat turns on. The wood breathes.
I’d be less afraid of ghosts and more afraid of a 7 year old house developing drywall and seam cracks so soon. I don’t know if you live in an area with significant snow. I do. The noises of all that weight on the roof are scary some nights.
Then again, could it be Chipmunks?

I hear creaks in the night, but I those are just my stiff joints in my arms and legs. But seriously, if there were ghosts mabe they are afraid of the living? have you seen the movie The Others? They can’t see you and you can’t see them.

The wood in your house is shrinking as it continues to dry. You notice it more in the night. It does stop after several years. I noticed the opposite effect when we moved into our house. I lived in newish houses growing up, and was used to the house noises. We bought a 1910 arts and crafts home, and it’s completely silent at night. The bumps in the night are something sinister…or a cat.

James Randi will pay you a million dollars for your ghost. Actually you get to keep the ghost, but you will get the million for showing that it exists.

Woood cracks, thats an known fact, until you see a ghost or listen to REALLY freaky noises, dont jump into conclusions!! But be alert.

@essieness I was thinking the same thing. If Ryan and crew can’t flush out the ghost no one can!

I don’t know if I believe in ghosts or not but some of the stuff that happens can be difficult to explain away (although Lupin makes a pretty good argument). I do believe that if ghosts do exist they are just confused spirits who haven’t made it to the other side yet and they are not dangerous.

How do you feel in the house? I have some places, once an entire neighborhood, but usually buildings, where I just cannot stay or am very uncomfortable.

Ghosts?

If I were you I would want it to be ghosts but I really don’t think it is.

I would have the home inspected to be sure it is structurally sound. 7 year old homes should not be moving that much regardless of location.

Yeah, that’s the other worry. Sometimes it’s like “is this ceiling gonna fall on me?”

Our neighbor’s house is the same way (different builder), so I suspect it’s the foundation and the traffic (and the would). We don’t have chipmunks, but maybe the chupacabra.

I just had to ask to get it off my mind. Thanks everyone!

There will be an real explanation eventually. Animals are most likely. Keep searching!

You could smudge your house. Many cultures use smudging to ward off anything that makes you feel uncomfortable.

put your hands out in front of you, palms facing upwards, if it’s ghosts you’ll feel a cold draft on your palms ( close the windows ) it’s true!
I have real ghost busters in my family – that’s what they taught me.

Yes if the ghost is called the house settling, then it has one.

Turn a fan on High. If you can suddenly here the cracks and noises over the loud fan then you may have problems with a demon trying to bother you. You don’t sound like you scare easy and you have thought this through before posting the question.

windimera's avatar

If its the construction of the home…move until it is redone.

You are so silly. The house was only 7 years old when you posted this. Ghosts only live in houses that are 100+ years old, like mine. Shall we discuss my valid ghost? He’s a hard working farmer ghost who goes out at 5:00 a.m. every morning to milk his ghost cows in his ghost barn.
