What is that USB flash drive called?

Asked by Dutchess_III (46857points) 1 week ago

I have some stuff I want to copy from one flash drive to another. The one it’s on has a square male plug in. My laptop has 2 ports. One is for for the square, which I have, the other is tapered. What is the tapered one called? (Do you guys know what I’m talking about? Do I know what I’m talking about?)

Thumbdrive usually. If you put it in it should automatically pop up witj the drive name.

Searching “thumb drive” on Amazon gives me the same exact result as searching for “USB flash drive”. Here is a picture of my ports..

From R to L, the first one is square. I have that.
The next one is tapered and that what I need.
Have no idea what the one on the far left is.

Sounds like you are talking about USB ports. USB-B ports are rectangular, and common for older ways to connect a device. You might have a micro-USB which is smaller and and has a slight curve to it. There are also other types of connectors.

Your best bet is to look up your computer’s manual on the internet and check out all the ports on a diagram.

You have a telephone port on the left, and an HDMI port in the middle, and a USB port on the right.

Left to right:

Ethernet port

HDMI (High-definition video) port

USB port

Can I save from USB to HDMI ?

Tropical_Willie's avatar

No, HDMI is to connect to a HDTV; it is video and audio for TVs, not data you would have on the Thumb Drive. On a laptop the HDMI sends the video and audio to the TV

Got it Willie.

Remember when some cell phones charging cables had square male parts and some were tapered?
(None shaped like mushrooms tho!)

Hell. I’ll just dump the stuff to my laptop and transfer it from there.

USB mini B is slightly tapered. Here is a diagram showing various types of USB connectors, for future reference. From this article.

I got it guys. Now I’m making 3 usb drives for each of my kid’s.
I rarely use my laptop…and it’s changed all to hell! I figured it out tho.
Do you think there were “updates” when I wasn’t trying looking?

Zaku's avatar

If it’s running Windows, there probably were “updates” . . .

Dutchess_III's avatar

They need to STOP!

Zaku's avatar

@Dutchess_III One of the reasons I still run Windows 7! No unwanted updates!

zenvelo's avatar

@Dutchess_III One of the reasons for updates is so that your computer can process new and update applications. Companies put new features on web sites, if you don’t get the updates, your computer can’t handle the features properly

Besides, the updates have nothing to do with you not understanding what ports you have and what they are for.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Mt complaint wasn’t about the ports. It was about the changes to the OS since I last was on it.

zenvelo's avatar

^^^My response wasn’t about the ports, it was about your resistance to updating your computer.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I was referring to navigating through my screens.
And now I understand the ports. Thank you.

Half the updates are to patch software that was found to be hackable. Windows has millions of lines of code and hackers continually look for ways to trick it into doing something nefarious.

Thanks RocketDude.
